梅瓶的装饰特征是：通过范金琢玉和纹彩相彰的模式，以刻划花和黑彩画花为主要手段进行装饰，在越窑、龙泉窑、景德镇窑、吉州窑等著名窑厂都有上乘表现。在纹饰布局上，也存在分层、分块儿、单体折枝等传统格式。分层格式也是分三层，有些分层加了开光，单体折枝最典型的表现在吉州窑黑釉剪纸划花器。另外，从北宋继承来的满饰格式又分为三种：缠枝结构、单元四方连续结构、密棱纹结构。
